FOUNTAIN COINS. DANIEL ROSEBERRY.
When Daniel Roseberry, creative director at Schiaparelli, crafted the brand’s 2024 Fall Couture Collection, he wanted to bring forth a feeling of nostalgia, a deep connection to moments in time that felt both familiar and timeless. Among the standout pieces from the collection is a dress that immediately caught my eye. Instantly, I thought of tossing coins into a fountain. Something we’ve all done at some point in our lives.
We toss a coin, we make a wish. Easy, but have you ever wondered where this originated from? It dates back to ancient civilizations, where the act of throwing coins into a fountain was associated with making wishes. It was believed that water was a conduit and by tossing a coin into a fountain, people believed they were offering something of value while seeking protection, or making a wish.
As your eye moves down the garment, the brass pieces become small and more frequent, cascading down the V-line of the dress, over the chest and along the waist. This placement mimics the motion of coins spreading out and creating ripples while being thrown in, it’s both literal and metaphorical.
The composition of the brass pieces plays with the eye, it catches light with movement, just as the way coins shine under sunlight as they lay below the surface. Each brass dot appears to float on the black fabric, an illusion of movement, as if they are in the process of floating right off the dress.
But the comparison is not just visually but texturally as well. The texture of the brass looks as if someone were to feel the ridges of a coin. Although these pieces may be softer to the touch, you can still imagine
Schiaparelli’s 2024 Fall Couture Collection, through Daniel Roseberry’s vision, reminds us that fashion can be more than just clothing - it can be a reflection of our collective human experience. By drawing parallels to the timeless ritual of tossing coins into a fountain, Roseberry’s design invites us to cherish our own wishes, serving as a celebration of elegance, history and the power of a single wish, all captured within the dance of brass and fabric.
