THE MET
Faux Flowers and Stems
Around 80 flowers and over 100 petals all separated and chosen by color. I single handedly took apart each petal, stem and leaf while I deciphered which direction I was going to take the piece. Contemplating between creating something long, or short, I decided to form the base of the dress using the stems of the faux flowers.
The stems themselves had a strong metal rod that gave them their strength, but when you bended the stems, the rod allowed them to hold and take shape. Using hot glue to reinforce them, I glued them tightly together as I bent the stems into shape, mimicking the mannequin in a way that it perfectly wrapped around its bodice.
One the base of the dress was complete, I moved onto placing stems with elongated ends at the top, giving the dress its dramatic top, seeming as if it is sprouting upwards. When it comes to the particular placement of the petals, I used the larger lilies and the delphiniums as the majority of the dress. The yellow and orange pin-teardrop-shaped flowers are called Pincushion plants, I used these coming down the left side of the dress, adding dimension to it. Along the top, it is lined with sea lavender flowers and gerbera daisies, I used the daises in particular to help highlight the sprouting effect of the dress.
